Budget

Step 4:

For anyone that has been through any remodeling job, you've learned that total budgets are quite easy to calculate:

(1) Decide upon the absolute maximum you wish to spend, and not one penny more.

(2) Double it.

(We see a bunch of nodding heads, all saying, "Been there, done that".)

Well, then, what do you budget? Far be it from us to tell you how to allocate your funds, so we'll stick to what we know.   You have your rough-in costs and finish costs.  The rough-in costs represent the work needed to prepare the space for the new cabinets.  The finish costs represent the cabinets, counters, paint, floors, appliances, sinks, tile, light fixtures, etc.  The cabinets in our MakeOvers have come from Home Depot, Custom Millwork Shops, Kitchen and Bath Dealers and Designers and Ready to Assemble (RTA) manufacturers.  The magic number range is $4,000 to $40,000 just for cabinets. Look at the photos of some of the Kitchens we have done and you will be able to tell which cabinets were more expensive.  When you work through the "Kitchen Estimate and Installation Checklist", you will see that the cabinets represent only a portion of the total budget and that we have included a Work summary that is very similar to what our estimate will look like when it is presented.  We ask that you fill it in as best you can.  Do not worry if you cannot make decisions for everything that is asked at this time.  You will need to eventually, but the idea is that the sooner you begin to think about all the ingredients in the MakeOver, the better your decisions will be.  Then you have had the time to put them into context with everything else and not at the 11th hour when work is progressing and the pressure is on.

On to Step 5
